D300s Best Features After Four Months

Written by ShutterAndLens on December 26th, 2009

After shooting more than two thousand images and tens of videos over the last four months I really have to say that the D300s is a great camera.  It really does enable me to take better pictures, and get the shot that I want.  Let me outline four of my favorite features that I like best about the D300 after four months:

1. 3.0 inch LCD Display – The display is an incredible improvement over the D70, and still a worthwhile, though not quite as mind blowing improvement over the LCD display on the D80.  The really nice thing about the larger display is that you can tell quickly whether you captured an image without blurring.

2. 51 point auto-focus – Whenever people look through the viewfinder of this camera they say “wow!”.  Not just because of the nice bright viewfinder, but because of all of the autofocus points which make it easy to tell exactly which portions of the image are in focus, and ensure that as much of the subject as possible is in focus.

3. HD Video – The quality of the HD Video is amazing, as is its ability to chew up hard drive and memory card space.  I would not trade it for anything however.  The ability to capture movement and sound is priceless in certain situations where you really want those elements to document the moment.

4. Easy Access to ISO  – This is another feature which is specific to the Dx00 line, and that I love.  My worst nightmare is shooting beautiful closeups or landscapes in full sun at 3200 ISO without realizing it.  Luckily the D300s makes it very easy to switch ISO back and forth with the dial on the top left, so I am much less likely to leave the ISO set without changing it back.  Also the quality at higher ISOs reduces the loss of quality significantly.

D300s First Thoughts

Written by ShutterAndLens on September 3rd, 2009

We’ve had the new Nikon D300s for a couple of days, and will be writing the full review shortly. From the first couple hours of use it is obvious that Nikon definitely has a winner. The D300s builds on all of the strengths of the D300 and adds a powerful and very flexible HD video mode to the mix. At first blush the video mode performs very well, including capturing very low light scenes with great clarity and minimal noise.  Check back soon for the full write-up!
